Always respect what you have to say. From Mark's blogs and interviews it seems that MCK comes from a different place than RFTF. He talks about Ingunn and Michele and being on the road but perhaps it is a similar frame of mind as RFTF. Don't know. "Sonically" -- the 2 albums couldn't be further apart. Not a knock on either one; they are just different.

WARNING, WARNING, WARNING, this is just one person's opinion and not meant to be ipso de facto on the subject.
First where I"m coming from. Really got into the Jayhawks with TTGG and its still my favorite Jayhawks album. My top three Jayhawks releases are TTGG, HTH and RDM. I'm not a big fan of Bunkhouse, too country for me. I'm more Louris than Olson but like both. Now with all that, my take on MCK. Overall, a solid album. Personally I like it better than Salvation Blues. Favorites from the CD so far: Little Bird of Freedom, Bluebell Song, Scholastica, King Snake, More Hours. My primary knock on it is that a lot of it sounds the same and has a bit of a plodding pace to it, there's times that seem ripe for a take off particularly on Morning Dove, Many Colored Kite, Not to live without her, YOur life besides us but it just doesn't happen. Listening to those back to back sounds too much the same. Interesting, though, if I just listen to one of the tracks by itself they are good songs, stand well on their own, but its just too much of the same thing. I would love to see these songs revved up a bit, not just for the sake of 'loudness' but to accentuate the emotion behind them. Tough to do solo, though. All that being said, I think this would have been an outstanding EP. Perhaps the hype didn't help either, IMHO this doesn't come near TTGG, HTH, RDM. Personally I like RFTF much more. Again just my opinion, to those who put this up there with TTGG, HTH, enjoy!

I dunno, to my very untrained ears I hear lots of similarities in at least some of MCK and RFTF. I think its the guitar picking. When I hear Morning Dove, No Time To Live Without Her and More Hours, it has a vibe of Black eyes, Saturday Morning on Sunday Street and Life's Warm Sheets. This is a good thing. And the awesomeness of Little Bird of Freedom brings to mind Doves and Stones. The rest of MCK certainly stands alone as something different.
To be honest, I was more so trying to comment on some of PP's other posts where he opined that MCK is stronger than HTH and TTGG. That really peaked my interest considering I waited to get my MCK (and that HTH and TTGG are my personal favourites). Thats a pretty ballsy thing to say, IMO. And while I realize he wasn't comparing the two, I found it odd to mention MCK in the same sentence as those early Jayhawks records. Its apples to oranges. My point is that RFTF is a much better comparison....seeing as they were released a year apart. Plus, much of the songs on RFTF and MCK are more centered around picking than strumming. Thats what I hear, anyway. And as much as I'm enjoying MCK, to say that its stronger than HTH or TTGG is completely misleading and premature, IMO. To that end, I'm probably one of the few who sort of half assed appreciate what PP brings to the table around here. I just don't always agree with his assessments and opinions even though sometimes he makes valid points. He's a Jayhawks/Olson fan. I can respect that.

Tricky business these days, assembling one's works into a proper album, and at a pace that the rest of the world doesn't always agree with. The postman hasn't arrived yet today, but I have a few more before the road beckons. This internet link is merely "ok" unless one has a super-duper sound package on their 'puter. Can't wait to catch a few shows on the tour...

It has far more variation than RFTF and Vagabonds, and also has more contrast than TSB. |

Personally, if Mark would tour with a band, then I think that could be one of the best shows of the year. Between SB, MCK and Jayhawks material he could play a ton of stuff and change it up each night.

I just finished listening on Spinner. A few random comments:
- I don't dislike it, but I can't say anything jumped out as amazing to me. - I'd say there is a fair amount of variation in the instrumentation, but there is something about the way Mark sings that makes everything feel a bit samey. - I don't know if it is a change in Mark's voice, a change in singing style, or the production, but Mark's vocals seem to stick out more than on anything he did with the Jayhawks, and I'm not saying that's a good thing. At this point I'd say it's enjoyable, but not life changing. We'll see what happens after another airing or two. YMMV. |

After one listen, I liked The Salvation Blues is better. I think musicdoc has a point, alot of it sounds the same.

That's because you've only spun it once. You really can't make any sort of judgement with only one listen.
